Determination of water hazard classes (WGK)
We determine the water hazard class for substances and mixtures according to AwSV
We determine the water hazard classes for substances and mixtures in accordance with the Federal Ordinance on facilities for handling substances that are hazardous to water (Verordnung über Anlagen zum Umgang mit wassergefährdenden Stoffen (AwSV)) of 18 April 2017. In the determination we go through the following process:
- Establishing existing data on mammalian toxicity, aquatic toxicity, biodegradability and bioaccumulation
- determination of the previous classification ("legal classification") for these endpoints
- Identification of other hazard-determining characteristics (e.g. carcinogenic or mutagenic effect)
- Determination of the H-phrases according to CLP regulation 1272/2008
- Allocation of assessment points and prevention points in accordance with Appendix 1 AwSV
- Derivation of the water hazard class (WGK)
- Documentation of the self-classification of substances and mixtures according to the regulations of the Federal Environmental Agency (according to Annex 2 AwSV)
There are three water hazard classes (WGK):
- slightly hazardous to water,
- obviously hazardous to water
- highly hazardous to water.
- Furthermore, substances can be classified as non-hazardous to water (nwg = nicht wassergefährdend) or are considered hazardous to water in general (awg = allgemein wassergefährdend)
